這張圖是在描述視覺系統，從眼睛到大腦皮質的過程。首先光從眼睛經過瞳孔打在視網膜上(視網膜是排列在眼球後方的5層神經結構)，最後一層會經由視覺接受器感覺到光，當視覺接受器受到光的刺激，他們會產生一種訊號傳導回第一層，那個有著視網膜神經節細胞的第一層。網膜神經節細胞是唯一視網膜神經元帶有軸突且軸突的路線經過眼球的裡層然後透出去行成一束，稱為視神經。幾乎所有的網膜神經節細胞軸突都會經過視交叉，在經過視交叉時，有一半的軸突會交叉一半不會。因此，經過這樣的排列，從左邊的視覺區和右半視網膜的資訊會傳遞至右邊的皮質而另外一邊則相反。經過了視交叉後，視網膜神經節細胞分成了兩束進入大腦，被稱為視覺神經束，視覺神經束的神經元會在視丘的側膝狀體終止，側膝狀體神經元的軸突經由視覺輻射投射到同側的第一視覺皮質上。

摘要:耳蝸為聽覺的接收器,產生刺激使聽神經傳到大腦皮質區產生聽覺,這中間一系列的路徑。

神經元和毛細胞的關係

耳蝸裡，毛細胞遠比傳入神經纖維少。受神經支配耳蝸的神經是前庭耳蝸神經，或腦神經VIII。神經細胞的樹狀突受神經支配耳蝸毛細胞。神經傳送體本身被認為是谷氨酸。在神經原突觸前的會合處，有一個分明"神經原突觸前的"密集體"或帶。這密集體被突觸神經泡圍繞，並被認為幫助快速釋放神經傳送體。由腦部到耳蝸的傳出投射也充當著聲音感知的角色。傳出突觸發生在外毛細胞的和內毛細胞之下的輸入樹狀突。

中樞聽覺系統

這些聲音的資訊，現在重新被編碼，透過部分的腦幹(例如，耳蝸核和下丘)沿著聽覺神經移下，進一步在各個小站被處理。資訊最終到達丘腦，並且從那裡它被傳遞到腦皮層。在人腦，主要聽覺腦皮層位於顳葉。

相關的解剖結構有:

耳蝸核是內耳裡最新轉為「數位」資料的神經細胞處理的第一站。

上橄欖複合體位於腦橋，並且優先接受來自前腹側耳蝸核的投射，雖然後腹側耳蝸核的投射也在那裡，但它則透過腹側聽紋接收。
