神經元(神經細胞)是神經系統中的功能性單位，為特化用來接收、傳遞及傳導電化學訊號的細胞。像其他細胞一樣，神經元被細胞膜所包覆，裡面含有清澈的液體稱為細胞質。細胞膜是半滲透的，也就是說細胞膜可讓某些分子通過，而其他的則否。

神經元有許多不同的大小及形狀，但大部分來說都具有下列四種構造。(1)細胞體：是神經元的代謝中樞，是細胞生存所必須。(2)樹突：從細胞體分支出來的短毛狀纖維，其主要功能為接收由其他神經元所傳入的訊息。(3)軸突：由細胞體延伸出來的單一長纖維，其功能為傳遞細胞體所發出的訊號至神經系統中的其他區域。(4)扣狀體：位於軸突末梢，像鈕扣般的構造，為神經傳導至其他細胞最多的部分。

基本上，其他神經元所傳遞的訊息由樹突接收，但有些則是直接傳至細胞體；接折訊號傳過細胞體至軸突，再從軸突傳至扣狀體，然後由扣狀體傳遞訊息至其他細胞。

名詞解釋

Cytoplasm (SITE oh plazm) 細胞質

The clear inner fluid of neurons and other cells.

神經元與其他細胞中透明的內在液體。

Cell membrane 細胞膜

The semipermeable membrane that encloses the cytoplasm of neurons and other cells; the wall of the cell.

包覆神經元及其他細胞細胞質的半透膜，為細胞的屏障。

Cell body 細胞體

The metabolic center of the neuron; also called the soma (pronounced SOE ma).

神經元的代謝中樞，也稱作soma.

Dendrites 樹突

The short bushy fibers that branch out from the cell body; they constitute the major signal-receiving area of the neuron.

從細胞體分支出的短毛狀纖維，構成神經元主要的訊號接收區。

Axon 軸突

The signal long fiber that extends from a neuron’s cell body; its function is to conduct neural signals from the cell body to other parts of the nervous system.

由細胞體延伸出來的單一長狀纖維，用來傳遞細胞體的神經性訊號至神經系統中其他的細胞體。

Buttons扣狀體

The button-like terminal endings of the axon branches.

在軸突分支中的鈕扣狀末梢。
