人類的神經系統有兩邊，一個是左邊一個是右邊，雖然兩邊結構有些細微的差異，但大部分還是相同的，所有的神經系統結構都有兩邊的運作。Unilateral 是單邊的，bilateral指的是雙邊。神經訊號的傳輸有兩種方式：ipslateral 指的是單邊的訊號從一邊傳到同一邊；相反的，contralateral是訊號從一邊傳到不同的一邊，且所有的反側傳輸都會經過交叉(decussate)後傳到另一邊，此交叉點就叫做decussation。
